Senator Mike Cronk

Senator Mike Cronk is a former standout basketball player at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and retired school teacher from Tok who has served in the Alaska Legislature since he was sworn into the House of Representatives in 2021. Voters elected him to the Alaska Senate in 2024. 

He represents Senate District R, a vast boreal forest of almost 200,000 square miles boxed in by two mountain ranges with the third largest river – the Yukon River – in the U.S. running through the middle of it. The number of people per square mile is 0.2. 

Senator Cronk was born in Oklahoma City and moved to Anchorage as a baby after his father was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. In 1978, his family moved to the Interior, which Cronk has called home ever since. He is a graduate of Walter Northway High School. Following graduation, he attended UAF on a basketball scholarship while working summers as an emergency wildland firefighter. Senator Cronk holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and taught elementary school for 14 years in Northway. He taught math and science for another 10 years in Tok before retiring in 2017.

From 1994-2019, the senator served on the Upper Tanana / Fortymile Fish and Game Advisory Committee. He also served on the school board for the Alaska Gateway School District. He raised four daughters, encouraging them to learn their Upper Tanana Athabascan culture and to build skills such as hunting, fishing and trapping.
